Directions: Approach the Waterfront from Portswood Road and park in the Portswood Parking Garage, under the Portswood & Commodore Hotels, or via Dock Road and park in the Portswood Garage opposite the Watershed.

We will take a short walk from the Breakwater Lodge Hotel, occupying what was the Convict Station for prisoners who built the first Breakwater in the harbour. We will look at some of the historic buildings, including the old Treadmill and Time Ball Tower along the way. We continue to Jetty 1 from where the prisoners were shipped out to Robben Island. Here Christo Brand, who was Nelson Mandela’s prison warden will tell us about his time at the prison and his relationship with Madiba. He is the author of ‘Doing Life with Mandela, my prisoner my friend’). Christo’s book will be on sale at a special price. Should you wish to purchase his book, please bring cash.

Note: wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat and water (and of course a mask).
